.Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Wales 1842 (Extract)

A parish in the higher division of the hundred of  DERLLYS union and county of Carmarthen, South Wales, 4 miles SSW from Carmarthen, containing 423 inhabitants, the parish is beautifully situated on the North Bank of the river Towy and comprises a large extent of good arable and pasture land, which is enclosed and in a good state of cultivation. The soil is extremely favourable to the growth of corn, of which great quantities are raised of a quality not surpassed by that of any other part of the principality. The surrounding scenery is richly diversified, the views comprehending a portion of the beautiful vale of Towy, with the ivy-mantled ruins of Green Castle overhanging the river, and other picturesque and pleasing features.

The total expenditure of the parochial rates for the year ending march 25th 1837, amounted to £283, of which £194 was for the relief of the poor, £62 toward county rates, and £27 for incidental charges

Llangain Parish does not have a main town or village, I would say that llangainchurch.JPG (22740 bytes)the main area of the Parish is a hamlet centered around the local Pub and the chapel of Smyrna, The Hamlet itself is very neat and tidy, as are the chapel grounds, much of the dwellings are of new construction, whereas the Parish Church is situated about a half mile from the cross roads of the hamlet.

The Parish Church of St. Synen & St Cain is on an eminence commanding extensive views up and down the Towy Valley, and across the Towy to Llandefeilog and St Ishmaels.

The Parish is surrounded by the Parishes of Carmarthen, Llangynog and Llanstephan, bordered on the East by the River Towy, with views of Llandefeilog & St Ishmael Parishes on the Eastern Bank of the Towy. It is approx; 4 miles south of Carmarthen Town
