CARMARTHENSHIRE ARCHIVES SERVICE

Documents are a vital part of Carmarthenshire’ s heritage. The storage, preservation and accessibility of these documents such as church, family and business records are of great importance to a growing number of researchers interested in all aspects of local and family history. The principal collection of documents is housed in the Carmarthenshire Record Office which was established in 1959. Many of the large estates, past and present, have deposited their documents dating back to the fourteenth century, in some cases. The church and various chapels, businesses, industries, as well as private individuals, have also deposited their historical papers all of which add to the cultural heritage of the County.

To preserve this vast number of documents (over a mile and a half of records) is the task of the Archives Service and its small staff complement. The work includes conservation, storage, cataloguing and indexing, and advising owners and users of the documents. And in addition to this essentially behind-the-scenes work the Record Office now receives nearly 4,000 visits from members of the public each year and handles many postal and telephone enquiries.
